Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
