Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
