European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
