Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
